Map what’s owed
Write down final pay, unused leave, severance, commissions, expenses, equity, and benefit end dates. Compare the list with your offer and plan documents.
Layoff first aid
This is a shock—not a verdict on your value. You do not have to solve your whole future today. Start with the next right things.
Nothing here requires you to “stay positive.” Just stay with the next step.
Your path from here
01 — RIGHT NOW
Do the minimum that protects you. The rest can wait.
02 — THIS WEEK
Deadlines vary. Start early and verify the rules that apply where you live.
Write down final pay, unused leave, severance, commissions, expenses, equity, and benefit end dates. Compare the list with your offer and plan documents.
Eligibility and timing are state-specific. Find your state’s official program and file promptly; do not assume severance makes you ineligible.
Find your state program ↗Compare a spouse or partner’s plan, COBRA, and the Health Insurance Marketplace. Note every enrollment deadline.
See coverage options ↗List cash, essential monthly costs, minimum debt payments, and benefits. Pause non-essential renewals before they charge.
03 — MONEY
Your “runway” is simply available cash divided by essential monthly spending. It is information, not a countdown clock.
Then call lenders, landlords, utilities, or card issuers before you miss a payment. Ask about hardship options and get any agreement in writing.
04 — HEALTH & BENEFITS
Losing job-based coverage can open time-limited choices. Compare total cost—not just the premium.
May let you continue the same employer plan temporarily, often at a higher personal cost.
U.S. Department of Labor ↗A loss of job-based coverage may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. Subsidies depend on household circumstances.
HealthCare.gov ↗Check a spouse or partner’s plan, Medicaid/CHIP eligibility, and any union or professional-association options.
Medicaid & CHIP ↗05 — WHEN YOU’RE READY
Motion helps. Frenzy usually doesn’t. Build a small, repeatable system.
Write ten wins while they are fresh: problems solved, numbers moved, people led, time saved, and praise received.
Define two or three role families—not twenty. Note the work, environment, pay floor, and tradeoffs you will accept.
Send a short, specific note: what happened, what you do well, what you seek, and the kind of introduction that helps.
Use focused blocks for networking, applications, learning, and recovery. Track quality conversations, not only application count.

“My role at [company] was eliminated. I’m proud of [specific result], and I’m now exploring [two target roles] in [industry/type of company]. If someone comes to mind who works in that space, I’d value an introduction. No pressure—and thank you.”
06 — HEADSPACE
A layoff can trigger grief, anger, shame, insomnia, or fear. Those reactions are human. Give your days enough structure to hold you while the uncertainty is loud.
A consistent wake time, movement, and one real conversation each day.
Choose a time window for job searching and news. Stop when the window ends.
Write two columns. Act on facts; talk through fears with someone you trust.

08 — COMMON QUESTIONS
Usually there is no benefit to signing in the room. Ask for the deadline, keep the complete agreement, and consider qualified legal advice—especially if the release, non-compete, discrimination, wages, commissions, equity, or a group layoff is involved. Review periods and rights can depend on age and circumstances.
Possibly. State rules differ, and the structure and timing of severance can matter. Apply promptly through your state’s official unemployment agency and answer every question accurately; let the agency determine eligibility.
Ask exactly when employer coverage ends. Compare COBRA, a spouse or partner’s plan, Marketplace coverage, and Medicaid/CHIP. Each has different deadlines, provider networks, deductibles, and total costs.
Keep it short and neutral: “My role was eliminated as part of [a restructuring / reduction]. I’m proud that I [specific result], and I’m now focused on [target].” You do not need to apologize or over-explain.
Only when you are ready and can be specific about what help you want. First save your documents, understand any communication terms, update your headline and contact details, and privately contact the people most likely to help.
Contact the landlord, lender, utility, or creditor before the due date, explain the income disruption, and ask about hardship arrangements. Call 211 for local assistance and use the CFPB’s consumer tools. Get any new terms in writing.
